With good AR 15 optics, this semi auto rifle has been proven to be accurate at 500 yards and up with heavyweight (69 grain) projectiles and a free floating fast twist rifle barrel. With bit of work and investments AR15 is capable of marksman level hitting accuracy of 1/2 MOA with selected match grade ammo. So, with properly set up AR accessories, which of course include scope and mounts, together with the proper selected ammunition operator can consistently hit destination target at long range. Before put scope on your AR 15 you should ask yourself what is primary purpose of this setup and how far distances you try to hit. With overall tactical class AR-15 optics most of the users go for 4x magnification scopes, this is great choice for 75 yards to 150 yards but note that target acquisition is slower then using plain AR 15 iron sights or holographic scopes. It’s hard to beat in performance and ruggedness of Trijicon ACOG 4×32 Scope with Red Chevron or Trijicon ACOG TA01NSN in this class of scopes as both are true military specs and battle tested by soldiers around the world.

Long range AR 15 optics scopes have the capability to aim and fire at small target for extended ranges, but have limited field of view which make hard to use them at close ranges, so mostly these scopes are variable magnification power with a minimum settings of of 3x to 4x and a maximum magnification power of 9x to 16x for long range. Scope reticules are usually mil-dot or other range finding type with very thin lines for easy aim. Most popular models for long range ArmaLite shooting enthusiasts are such popular models like Leupold Mark 4 6.5-20×50, Leupold VX3 4.5-14×40, Bushnell Elite 6500 4.5-30×50 and Burris Fullfield II 6.5-20×50. This models are good AR optics for decent price which serve end user long years and give hours of shooting fun.

Once you start hitting targets 300 yards and up, you’ll start to see a true difference why there are so much difference in cost of some scopes, higher cost scopes really start performing out the less expensive sights. For true long range shooting, general recommendation by experienced shooters are simple – buy the most expensive riflescope scope you can afford, better save your money longer and get most what you can from your money.

Reflex, holographic sights and red dots are excellent at close combat ops or home defense situations, they provide no magnification (some models have external magnifiers for extended range shooting, like EOTech magnifier) and are intended to shoot fast and precise at ranges not exceeding 100 yards, unless you shooting at large target, so basically if you can see target where you aim with red dot optics, you can shoot at it. Most favorite by civilian and military users AR-15 optics scopes are made by Trijicon and EOTech, they are super fast to aim and truly reliable at most rugged conditions. They are costly compared to lower end, but when on scale is your life, there are not any thoughts like cost and money. Manufacturers has models which have reticule illumination from batteries, Tritium and Fiber Optics so user just need to choose what fits their needs better.
